Searching previous postings has left me confused and I wonder if someone who has done it can give straight answers!

I've just bought a 750 with inbuilt UK/Ireland/Holland g2 charting. You now get with it one free update to be used within a year of purchase. I don't know if that literally means purchase or the date you register it through the website - how will they know? Later updates after that appear to be a case of buying a complete new chart rather than updating, unless I've misunderstood the website.

To do the update you need a micro SD card - but what capacity? The book and website don't tell you. My PC is fairly old and won't take SDHC cards so I'm limited to 1GB or possibly 2GB - will that do?

The chart in it now is 2012.05. Can you find from the Garmin website the dates of current editions and when they bring out new ones? I've tried and failed! Obviously I want to work out when best to use my update.

If you go into the updating website with your SD card loaded with your device details, does that instantly commit you to taking the currently available update or can you say "no thanks, I'll leave it for now" if it looks as though a later one may be coming soon?

If I updated now I guess I would get a late 2012 version; if I wait to June will I get 2013.05 for example?

Thanks for illumination!

Not sure about most of your queries, but Garmin did issue updates last month. ISTR that they issue them every six months, but not absolutely sure.

These are the file sizes I needed for the Garmin Vision Chart VEU456S-English Channel Central-East v2013.0, its one of the small ones, so a regular or large chart may be bigger. You can see from the file dates that I got a 2013 version in Mar 13.

Pete

There is no mention in the gpsmap 750 manual of SDHC cards so you might want to try one first before investing, unless someone here can confirm they work.

That's the problem - it gives no hint of what capacity you need.

No my point is that is doesn't even confirm that a SDHC card will work in the device. Capacity is a secondary issue since these are so cheap now. You could buy a 16GB card for a tenner but find the plotter unable to read it.

OK, good point.

I suspect it will work so sorry to add to the confusion just worth noting. I'd imagine you'll know someone with a camera which takes the cards who you can borrow from and test. If you don't then post here and I'll come to Brighton with a laptop and a card to test as it's not far out of my way :)

I have used 2,4 and 8 GB cards in my 750 and all seem to work and can cope with the updated Britain and Ireland chart.

I put the question to Garmin:

"What size SD card is needed to update the g2 (not Vision) UK
and Ireland marine chart please? Does it need SDHC? My PC only takes SD
not SDHC and I think is limited to 1GB is this enough please?"

they have replied

"The standard G2 mapping will fit on a standard 4GB SD card for this
region.

Please note this does not have to be in a HD format."

Not clear if that means it won't fit on less than 4GB.
Assuming by HD he means HC, it suggests you can use SD or SDHC but it's not definitive.

So I still don't know!!

Had further info from Garmin:

"The exact download size is: 434MB this is not including the Software
update that will be downloaded to the card which is mandatory. This will
take up 3GB of memory."

Solved! My camera will act as a USB card reader and the Garmin is happy with its 8GB SDHC card.
Garmin tell me updates are normally Feb and Aug so I can have my free one in Sep.
After that if I read the website correctly - it's confusing - it seems I can have one half price update then next time it's it's full price around £230!
Nasty.
