Garmin 64 GPS

I have an old Garmin 64 from about 1994. It functions OK excepting that two rows of buttons no longer work. Garmin don't support repairs anymore. I have heard that this is a fairly common problem and can be resolved by using a small pin on each of the buttons puncturing the plastic button covers.
Any one any thoughts on this as I am reluctant to throw away as it is at least a workable back-up?

I don't know that particular unit but in general membrane switches can be replaced by normal switches if you can pickup the wiring.

It may be that stripping the unit down and gently cleaning the track behind the membrane switches may help. If the track has corroded I would try conductive paint of some sort but it is expensive.
