Garmin and time to arrive
Hi all,
Just wondering what the general opinion is of the way Garmin calculates the time to arrive on the GPSMAP 551 (and i guess on all their marine chartplotters)
Seems it uses the GPS speed rather than the VMG which seems nonsense to me. Was travelling away from the next waypoint on a route at the weekend, VMG was -4kts and time to arrive was still reading 1 hour which I thought was very good for a circumnavigation!!
I know that in a yacht I will be tacking and changing my direction/speed regularly but that is what VMG is for and time to arrive should change accordingly.
Called their support and they weren't particularly helpful and didn't really come with a persuasive argument. Surely this is basic navigation theory when calculating a ETA?
