I keep getting "Memory battery low" messages on my Garmin 48. I spoke to Garmin who said charge it up via the 12v lead. This solves the problem for a bit but it comes back a couple of weeks later. It looks as if the m emory battery might need changing. Garmin has offered to do this but before I pack it up and send it off, I wonder if I can do it myself? Has anyone tried this? Grateful for any advice.

Not a diy job as the case has to be re sealed , while being purged with dry air/ nitrogen

I've the same problem but as you know leaving it connected to 12V clears it. Since I'm using it in a cradle as backup it's not a problem...but it will happen again and again...from new, I think it first appeared after about a year or so, so is it worth returning to Garmin or are they doing it FOC? Is it a design fault, I wonder? What model replaces it, do you know. I use it and gps65 simultaneaously from the same external antenna since with its own stubb it's pretty deaf inside the boat, otherwise it does the business despite the small display. Maybe a Furuno should replace it?

I would put some faith in Garmin, I can only praise them for their after sales service, when I sat on my 48 they sent me a new arial by return post FOC.
