A mate here in Portugal has bought a boat with one but no chart card fitted. It seems to be the Bluechart card. Can anyone explain how the card works please? It looks a bit like a USB stick, do the charts come on an sd card that fits in it or does the card have to be programmed to suit?

The 3006C uses Bluechart g2 cartography on Garmin data cards. I believe that these data cards are obsolete now, although you may still be able to buy them. The USB device is a data card programmer, which allows you to program cards with cartography downloaded to your PC.

I had a 3010 some years ago and the charts were on a peculiar device unique to Garmin. I changed to a 5012 and the charts for this are on SD Cards. However, the 5012 is now also considered obsolete and only some of the new Garmin charts work in it although they are still on an SD card. I am afraid I think you will be lucky to source a chart for a 3006.
but you could try Ebay.
