I have recently purchased navigation software for my laptop and need to purchase a cable to connect to my garmin 128 gps . The part no is 010-10275-01 but i cannot find a supplier, can anybody help or is there another lead i can use
Tim

The cable which comes with the Garmin 128 has both the power connection and data connection as flying leads (at least mine does).

The data connections are:

GND ...(ground) ............... pin2 of connector........BLACK
TXD ...(transmit data) .............4.......................... WHITE
RXD ...(receive data)...............3.......................... BROWN

If conneceting to a small sub-d serial port connector, the connections are

Gnd........sub-d pin 5................garmin 2.........black
Txd.......................3...........................4..........white
Rxd.......................2...........................3...........brown

Hope this helps, Vic

If you mean the 9-pin sub-d connector at the computer end, yes, readily availably from MAPLIN and similar.

The GARMIN end connector is less common, but I havn't searched and probably available somewhere (try RS). This is one case where searching old fashioned paper catalogues was much easier than online!

I have a Garmin 128 and have connected it to my laptop computer by purchasing a used serial computer mouse. I just cut off the mouse and used the cable. I show

I also connect the Garmin to my Autohelm autopilot. Works great.

Couple of points :

Garmin connectors are preculiar and not readily available for DIY fitment. Normally you have to buy a cable to Garmin connector ready made. Other end can be wires or pre-made as you choose.

Second you do not say whether it is USB or RS232 serial you need ...... Garmin up until recently did not supply USB cable types on many of their GPS.

There are many 3rd party suppliers on-line who can supply exactly what you require .... a couple have been quoted here .... Lynks GPS Positionsystems There is also GPS Warehouse UK .....

A google on GPS Cables ....... this is an example Google return : Google on GPS Cables ....... and look through - often coming down to price at end of day.

Good luck and once connected you'll wonder why you waited so long !! Just a thought - have you considered joining my GPS Nav group listed below .... we have members all over the world - novice / experts, software producers / chart / gps companies etc. All ready to help everyone get started and get best out of the GPS etc.

thanks for that
I have connected as you detailed but still have no position on my laptop.I am running Seapro lite(euronav)on a dell c600 1ghz 256 connected to my Garmin 128.
There is a note on the nmea port page that not all com ports will recieve nmea 0183 .
Can you give me any pointers
Tim

Ensure that the data output on the Garmin is set to NMEA, default is 'Garmin' which your PC will not understand.

On the PC end, check which com port your software is looking at, most will auto detect, but some need to be told.

Garmin vs NMEA

In fact many software packages do read Garmin protocol - but you need to check the menu / help when setting up GPS in the charting software.

NMEA also comes in various forms ... so ensure that GPS set-up and PC Chart software are set to same ....
