I bought a trash bag holder from Force 4 to replace the one we have which springs shut and only opens far enough to encourage you to try to brush the cutting board into it, then shoots all the gubbins over the floor.

The Force 4 one has a 'D' shaped top with hinged lid and is supposed to take either supermarket bags or proper bin bags, it appears to have teeth to grip the bags.

So far I have spent 2 hours trying to get this thing to hold a bag. Put anything in it like last night's wine bottle and the bag just slides out, try and get the bag on the teeth thingies and it still falls but tears the bag this time too. The very elaborate moulding appears to have 'extras' in the form of a cut-out slot on the left and a moulded in recess on the right, no idea what either are for. There were no instructions, just a stapled on label saying there were 2 kinds of accessory mounts available to use for example as a cockpit rail bin.

I have exhausted 35 years of nautical bodge-meister lateral thinking technical knowledge and am resigned to being beaten by a £7.95 trash bag holder.

HELP! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Take it back and tell them its nfg. Or, much more satisfying, stamp on it and then chuck it in the dustbin. Just make sure you don't chuck it in a Force 4 dustbin.

You could modify it to work like mine...

Mine is 'D ' shaped and the bag goes inside the 'D' and is then folded outwards over the top of the 'D'. On mine the bag is then held in place by a length of bungee chord which has just enough tension to hold the folded over edge of the bag in place against the outside circumferance of the afore mentioned 'D'

[These instructions have been Granny tested for clarity]

Works perfik

Nick

ps. I tried to replace mine last year but failed to find a suitable offering ...so repaired it with speed tape.

That is plan B. I was hoping that someone wiser or bodgier would come up with plan A to say what I am apparently doing wrong.

Currently it is pi$$ing down so plan B is on hold and I'm sitting staring at said piece of 21st century design scratching my head! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have just got it on test now! The thing itself is mounted by sliding it onto 2 strategically sighted screws which fit into moulded recesses in the back of it. By removing the whole caboodle just by sliding it off the screws to fit a bag and then adding a stout elastic band it has so far passed the 10 minute hold the bottle test.

I still think the thing is supposed to work without a bungee or elastic (instructions would be nice) but who knows what went through this designers mind. I think it had more to do with him hating his job and finding a way to take his revenge on the poor sod trying to fit his creation and make it work.

I don't think I'll risk trying anything more difficult today so I wonder if I dare to clean the BBQ ready for the return of summer....

Thanks

Robin

Is this the same one as yours? Lalizas 'Store-All' trash bag holder. I think they meant Lalizas TRASHY bag holder really.

No ..mine is similar but not the same..also it does'nt have a lid but may have had one at some point

Good luck...i wish my question about batteries had attracted as much attention as your Q about rubbish bins!

I had one simular. It had 2 hooks each side pointing down of the fixed D shaped part.

The 2 handles of the plastic bag would come over the top under the lid down the outside of the fixed D shape then under the hooks.

Mine worked OK but the bottom of the bag would break quite oftain and with the bag on view did not look very nice and the plastic lid broke.

I remade one in ply and formica but when the bag was full (over full) cound not remove the bag without removing the contence, like defeating the object.

On my new boat I paln to have a botton hinged door with a silde in plastic bin like a small kitchen unit rubblsh bin.

All you need is a plastic hook & a supermarket plastic bag. Hook one (when in use) or both handles (stowed in sailing mode) over the hook. When it's full, tie the handles & chuck in a locker until you can dispose of it & its companions ashore.

ours has become a towel holder for tea-towels and hand towels in the galley. Absolute rubbish <pun>. We went back to a mini swing-bin wedged into a corner.

A mini swing bin screwed inside the locker door was plan C but so far with added bungee the design of the year has survived a test of holding last night's bottles. Thus far then Castaway's method wins the prize.

Stupid problem I know but why is it so difficult to design one that works and does it intuitively yet doesn't need help from bodger's bungee or an old Fairy Liquid bottle and some sticky tape!
