If anyone is interested, TG4, the Irish language tv station has just started a series on the Galway Hooker. The first episode is available to view on their website (hopefully for UK residents too). It's in Irish, but with subtitles.

Just go to TG4 , click on Sport, and the program name is Ar Bharr na dTonn (On the crest of a wave).

Went to a galway hooker festival in Portaferry, some years ago, wonderful old boats, more like a barge than a boat, but they really enjoy their racing!! and really go for it, gunwales under the water etc.

I saw it on TG4 the other night, Sunday 8 o clock (Dé Domhnaigh ag a hocht a chlog). I have to say for TG4 the aerial shots were pretty good. The biggest difference I found between the hooker racing and other racing on the tv was the lack of sail numbers or colour schemes in the boats made it difficult to tell them apart, well worth watching and I'm happy to see some proper Irish language support for traditional sailing on the television.

I originally come from Portaferry and we used to host the Hookers every year. Wonderful old boats. They were originally designed for hauling turf/peat etc out to the Arran Islands.
That distinctive stern allowed them to take the big atlantic swell stern on.
