Galvanizing in Pompey

Anyone know if it is economical to regalvanize an anchor and chain? My 50m chain and, to a lesser extent, 25 lb CQR have lost their galvanizing and have a layer of surface rust.

Any ideas of a company that does this in the Solent area?

dont know about the chain, which will need special treatment, but I had some galvanising included in a load by Hayling Trailers, and just had to pay for the weight of the galvanising, whereas if you deal direct you have to pay a large minimum order fee.
 
I also had a small item galvanised via Hayling trailers a few years ago. Min charge then was a fiver IIRC but I think it was about £80 min to have dealt directly with the galvanisers.

I think chain requires a galvanisers with a centrifuge.
 
Have many items done at Humber galvanisers, Minimum charge now gone up to £38, (to give you an idea this is a couple of driveweay gates)
service is usually within 48hrs, remember anything hollow must have a hole in either end 5mm dia min.

As an aside the galv trade has its own magazine known as "wedgeworld" !(trivial persuit question no doubt)

The galvanizers will clean it too, I guess some sort of acid is used. I bought a cheap CQR becuase it was all rusty. Regalavanized for a few quid and it came back like new.

As an aside, I also had a bracket for a garden statue done. The bracket fell into the tank and couldn't be found. Galvanizers did pay out for the cost of its replacement.

I think paint or grease has to be removed before the items are submitted though as the acid will not remove them.
 
Maybe several of us in the vicinity of Hayling Trailers could get a batch load together? When I last approached them several years ago regarding a 25lb CQR they were not exactly keen .... maybe just the person on the desk that day though.

I redid my chain and anchor at a galvaniser in Eastleigh. Can't remember the name, but I'm sure it will be in the yellow pages. It was about £30 for a 20kg CQR and about £120 for 50 metres of 10 mm chain.
 
Regalvanised two CQRs and chains (different boats) and it is economic. Chain needs a vibrating table when galvanising and then a bang with a hammer on every link to make sure it is free - not a particularly tedious task. I did see a chain galvanised without the shoogling table and the owner spent over a week hammering away at the congealed lump before he gave up.
Recommend Highland Colour Coaters of Elgin but that may be a little far from the soft south!
