Could someone tell me how many gallons per hour a 24' sports cruiser like a Regal 242 with a Mercruiser Bravo III 5.0L will burn at a mid range cruising speed and top end. Also do you know if this boat would be ok on solent waters?

Hi
No problem on the solent and on good days over to the channel islands.
No idea about fuel for this one ,but i have Twin 4.3 alpha 1 on my 27 feet Searay and i burn about 10 gals an hour at around 23 mph, faster than this and it goes up to around 17 gals an hour at 40 mph

A rough guide would be (more or less) 1 gallon a mile at cruising speed?

Everyone will give you different answers on gph due to many factors, so to add to the confusion, my 24ft sportcruiser with single 5.0ltr does around 8gph at 20 knots rising to 15 gph at WOT which is around 30 knots.
I have taken mine from the Solent around to Essex and across the channel to France and the channel islands. Providing you have good settled forecasts and are happy with the reliability, (good to have an aux engine anyway), then fuel capacity becomes the only real obstacle.

Re: Nah, that\'s a bit thirsty

More like just under 2 mpg. Or that's what we used to get from a 23' Maxum

Wide Open Throttle

Also, although very few 5.0L were fitted with a Bravo III ( almost exclusivley Alpha 1), if your boat has a Bravo III be aware there are corrosion issues on certain serial #'s on this drive. See mercruiser service bulletin boards.

Have a look at http://www.boattest.com . Select 24' and sportscruiser (the 242 isn't listed) but you can see accurate speed and consumption figures and graphs for a variety of similar boats/engines. The graphs are very illuminating, showing clearly the very narrow range of speeds where boats are most fuel efficient
