I read in the YM that the new European Galileo GPS system will be in place by 2008 and the UK government is chipping in £86 million.

I ask myself why? when the US already has a system in place. Why not spend the money on supporting the British Yacht building industry or subsidising cheaper marinas/mooring as I understand the case in France to boost local economy.

After all said and done it is our dosh.

The problem with the US system is what happens if they want to switch it off. It is after all run by their department of defence and so much of Europes economy now depends on this navigational system it seems risky to leave one person with the power button.

I personaly think it is good idea and a far better use of cash than some of the other things this government wasts things on.

Point taken..... but are you saying that some high flying general in Brussels is not going to turn off the european sats. in case of an emergency, like the EEC parliment running out of toliet paper????

I agree that all goverments waste money, but.......... £83million, and please don't tell me that it will be reinvested in jobs.

It's for the world - but its going to be a pay as you go system - just like the Skye Bridge and the North Birmingham Bypass will be - It's a sort of another PFI con to get to you pay VAT on already taxed monies. Let's hope that we can still use the NASA GPS for free forever and trailer sailer our boats around the M42/M6 to eventualy meander our way to Kyle of Lochalsh to void the rip-off merchants who operate the Skye Bridge*

PFI stats for the Skye Bridge from the Audit Office: Private contractors contribution: £500,000. Maggie Twitchhead's coffers £23,500,000. HM Government guaranteed minimum income to the toll keepers for 30 years: £30,000,000 per annum index linked. So who is conning who?

First, it's not going to be in the hands of the military and second, it will be free to private people but paying for businesses who want to base a private systemon on it. Similar necative response were expressed when the European Ariane rockets and the Airbus were proposed. Now interests in Florida and Boeing in the Northwest USA are not too happy about the European competition....

Good story about it in last week's New Scientist. Mighty lot of things are going to be fixed to Galileo. Road pricing for instance. Every mobile phone in a couple of years will have a (compulsory) chip so when you dial 999 the cops will know where you are to within 20ft. And much else. So Europe has decided to have its own independent system. Fair enough, I think.

One day...

....there will be one superpower on the western side of the Atlantic and another one on this side. They will be rivals in all things:- trade, patronage of the rest of the world, defence capabilities and so on. Then they will fall out with each other over some trifle and isolationism will advance ahead of hostilities commencing.

One day, one day.

Re: One day...

Sadly Steve I think you may be right.
Only alternative I can see is big internal fall out amongst the European friends and partners.

Precedents for dragging states into federal groupings against their will are not very encouraging :

United States
Yugoslavia (former)
USSR (former)

People have longer memories than politicians like to believe

What makes anyone in Europe believe that if the fertilizer confronts the air conditioning, that Uncle Sam will not push some button somewhere and zap Galileo. The NSA will not concede the airwaves when push comes to shove. 'Apple Pie' gets a war - Galileo gets a headache. As Guinness say at he moment, Believe!
