Could anyone explain the difference between a G2 Gennaker and Asymmetric Spinnaker? Some people appear to believe they are one and the same and yet others they are not. Do they operate in different AWAs and wind speeds?

Thanks again for any input. I'm getting there :)

If that is the North G2, it's a medium to light wind reaching sail. A specific trade name for a specific wind angle and speed.

An asymetric spi can be made of varying cloth weights to deal with light thro' to heavy winds, and cut to be flown from a fine reach to nearly a full run. A general term.

My word, you are learning fast ! :) Hope you are enjoying it.

You might like to look up polar wind diagrams when specifying the sail wardrobe. Any decent sailmaker will be able to show you one for a particular boat. He can then overlay various sail characteristics, so that you can order the number and type of sails to suit your sailing style. The racier the approach, the more the sails, and the narrower their operating envelope.

North have a two page PDF with all their downwind sails explained. PM me i f you can't find it and I'll mail it to you. FWIW my G2 is a full downwind gennaker which is fuller than the gennaker I had on my previous boat and which does everything a traditional spinnaker would do except when we are sailing dead down wind or very nearly dead downwind. Plus a whole load easier to handle of course.

I think I have that file. It's called "North Sails code downwind.pdf" and covers North A, S, C and G sails.

Miles, is yours a North G2? If so would you mind giving some details of your boat, rig and sail size?

I wouldnt get too het up over fine tooning the sail selection..... I would suspect that the majority of cruisers, even up to some quite largish boats... rarely use anything other than the white goods... If you like that boat... try the sails it comes with.. (Must be some logic going..) and then make some changes based upon experience and what will or wont work for your circumstances.

It not like engines... you can change em pretty easily if you dont like em..

Might want to add a storm job on a removable inner forestay though... that always makes sense.
