Hi,

Just wired up radar that has a 5amp fuse connected between the screen and power supply cable. I've put it on the old radar breaker circuit that's also rated at 5amp. Is this ok or should I only have one 5amp fuse/breaker in the circuit? What would happen if I had two/both?

Fanks!

Two fuses in series are redundant, but you do no harm having them both. The breaker will probably go before the fuse, fuses are rated at what they will run at indefinitely, not what they will blow at. This is current dependent, for instance a 5A fuse will blow after 1 second at 8 Amps, or 0.1 second at 10 Amps, in air.

But if you have a circuit breaker in an accessible position on a switch panel in series with a fuse in line with the wiring at the back of the switch panel, the fuse will always blow before the circuit breaker /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK, so the fuse is blowing. Replace fuse, blows again. Basic question:

What procedure should I follow to try and identify the problem? What should I be checking with the multimeter? Where's the best place to start looking or is it a case of 'this could be symptomatic of any number of problems'?

Does it only blow when you turn the screen on, or as soon as you put power onto the power supply cable ?

If the former, it's the screen!

If the latter, it could still be the screen, but also the cable. Disconnect cable from screen. Now does the fuse blow ? If yes it's the cable if no it's the screen.

Only blows when I turn the screen on.

If it's the screen then, what can I do to test this, or do I just return it? Please see my next thread on this issue!

OK, so it's not the screen. It is, as I warily suspected, my wiring! If I disconect the cable running from the screen to the dome and just connect the power cable to the screen, it boots up ok.

Arse. Another day up the mast for me tomorrow then!

Well, one negates the other. Because I've worked out that it's NOT the screen I don't have to worry about trying to get that replaced or invalidating my warranty. Phew.

My nightmare was having to use the old radar cable up the mast and connect it to my new cable and dome. Twenty three wires down to nine (I used eight spare wires for the positive and eight for the negative). One or more of those twenty three wires is wired incorrectly...but which one???

Any tips on how to work this one out? Assume the nine wires from the screen to the junction box at the base of the mast are ok. It's one of the twenty three wires from the junction box to the dome! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
