I had this problem with Niton on the East Coast here and last year got a software upgrade which improved the number of messages received. Had to pay for it mind which considering the kit was not fit for purpose is a bit much.

The problem is Niton, but not a conditions problem as the strong wind warning always comes through (0430) but the immediately subsequent forecast doesn't (0500). Who did the software upgrade come from?

I had a similar problem with a Furuno Navtex - it would pick up more distant stations but very rarely received Niton. When it did, it only got the short message, never the longer forecasts. This was the case in the Solent and around Dartmouth.

I spoke to Greenham Regis and they offered to upgrade the software - they (and Furuno) were aware of a problem that Furuno had with Niton and the software upgrade apparently reduces its sensitivity to small frequency fluctuations in the transmitter. This made a small improvement but in the end they replaced all of the electronics and it now works perfectly.

Once it started working properly, I've been very happy with it. The upgrades were all done free without presenting any evidence of a receipt or warranty. I'd suggest that you keep pressing your supplier. Furuno know there is an issue with Niton with some receivers (some people get lucky don't seem to have any problems). You are perfectly within your rights to demand a refund as it isn't `fit for purpose' but once working properly, it is a very nice unit, so it's worth persisting.
