Hi all!

A couple of years ago a question arose about Furuno 1623 radar. The toothed drive belt either was sticking or coming off thereby showing "No Heading Pulse" on screen.

At the time I didnt have a problem but now I do. Unfortunately, I cant remember any of the remedies discussed.(An age thing!)

Does anyone know how to fix the problem?

The belt appears to ride over the teeth of the drive. I've replaced the belt but to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

That was a thread I started. The belt was climbing the teeth of the toothed pulley and stalling the motor.
IIRC, one suggestion was to tension the belt slightly more. That might have done the trick, but didn't seem possible on my set without some surgery of the motor mount.
Furuno advised me that a different, more powerful motor was available. The local agent didn't know about it, and it didn't seem to address the problem, so no result there.
I then tried lubricating the belt with silicone vacuum grease. That was 3 seasons ago and seems completely successful. I've had no further problem since. I suggest you try that.

PS Hostage; be interested how you changed the belt. It appears to require unsoldering of the scanner connections. Is that correct?

Your first line expresses exactly my problem and the difficulties you mention mirror the road I've travelled.

Last winter I removed the radome from the mast and left it with the local dealer. He knew nothing of the uprated motor that Furuno spoke of so he replaced the belt which he thought it needed. However, he didnt have a wiring loom to power up the unit and run a realistic test so I was left with a "suck it and see" situ. In the event it ran for almost 5 minutes before failing again. So here I am!

He has suggested to me this year that I file the sharp edges of the teeth on the pulley but if that didn't work I would be farther back than I started.
Your solution makes sense to me. It addresses the same issue without the surgery so its back up the mast with the aerosol of silicone grease as soon as weather permits.

I had the same problem and cured it by just slackening off the motor mount screws and moving the motor away to tighten the belt slightly. I used a screwdriver to hold the motor as far across as possible then tightened the screws.
There is just enough clearance in the holes to get the belt tight enough so that it doesen't climb up the splines and jamb.
