does anyone know if it is possible to anchor in the grande rade at cherbourg? the maps/pilots don't seem to mention it, apart from keeping out of the way of traffic naturally.

You can certainly anchor in the Petite Rade. Just west of the entrance to Port Chanteryne (marina).

Don't go too far west of the entrance, the bottom is really weedy! Been there.

Previous posters have said it but I will add one caution. Anchor just north of the marina breakwater - within 120m. North of that and to the west is the military port. They tend to send bulky young men with big guns to greet you if you go in there. You are allowed to manoeuvre in some of the military area but other bits are very, very off limits. It’s all on the charts.
