Furry Anodes

A couple of pages ago I ridiculed a chap in my local boatyard for wrapping tape around his shaft before afixing his shaft anode .Now the joke maybe on me 'cos Iv just discovered that my hull anode is covered in fine weed . I never noticed it previous years . Nor have I noticed it on other boats . Anyone got an explaination ?? BTW it was new last year and doesnt appear to be being eaten away .
Cheers
Terry

Re: Furry Anodes

Waping tape under an anode defeats the purpose of the anode (the metalic contact).
If the anode has not be eaten away-What has?
Oxide forms on anodes when in contact with air which as an adverse effect on the galvanvic protection and should be cleaned before entry into water with emery paper. This could be why weed is growing on yours.

Re: Furry Anodes

Just to be clear...... Terry didnt wrap tape under his anode... he said that he previously criticised someone who did.

Are you saying that when you buy an anode that has been sitting in air since manufacture, it will have oxidised, and needs sanding off?

I've always just stuck mine on, and they've been eaten away like they should.

[/ QUOTE ] The thing that would worry me is that it is not wasting away, at least if it normally does. While wasting away is not proof that it is actually doing any good it is pretty certain that if it is not wasting away then it is not doing what its been installed for.

I think you should check the bonding cable and ensure there is a good electrical connection all the way from it to the item(s) its is fitted to protect.

Maybe the lack of electrical activity is allowing the weed to grow.
