We have a 35ft gaff cutter, with a furling jib and hanked-on staysail. We currently have a Schaefer 650 free furler for the jib, but the bearing in the top swivel is worn out. We could just replace the top swivel, but I'm wondering about replacing the whole thing with something like a Profurl NEX 1.5 It's not very traditional looking, but I need this to just work as we sail short-handed. I'm talking about furlers, like the Wykham-Martin units, because we need to be able to retract the bowsprit, not roller reef systems with foils.
Does anyone have any experience to compare the continuous rope spool furlers against the traditional drum systems?
There's also a question of loads and sizing, but I think we'll just assume that the existing 6mm 7x19 jib halyard is a good guide.
