I was thinking of increasing the diameter of the drum on my furlex. There's plenty of space and initial line loads have always been a bit high. Has anyone done this. Any thoughts. A simple sleeve ought to do the job.
Maybe you could just make your furling line a bit longer, so that there are spare turns on the drum. this would increase the starting diameter and thus make it easier for your initial pull.
I'll guess that you want to increase the diameter to give more leverage, so you don't need to pull so hard. If so, has it always taken too much pull, or is it getting harder over time? My first idea would be to clean the bearings of the swivels - hot water to wash the salt out. If the bearings are steel, a bit of thin grease on them - you may need to clean the old, hardened grease off first, if Delrin, then leave them dry. I'd also look at the run of the furling line - any other blocks that might need a clean?
I have a sleeve on my Harken furler, think it is by Harken. It is split in two halves. Have had problems with the furling line working itself underneat the sleeve, adding friction. I have tied an elastic cord around the sleeve at the base, works but not perfect.
It always been a hard initial pull. Boats got a big Genoa and if it gets up to 25kts its a bit of a pull. Probably should have bought the next size up furling gear.
