In my previous life I had a small number of instances of dishonesty/thieving and in all but one case I summarily sacked the offenders. With one of them I took the kind/softer route and kept him on. He did something similar about 12 months later - bye bye. Was never "kind" again.
Was your employee charging for his services during the hours he was working for you on in his own time? If the latter then he's probably not done a lot wrong - bit greedy perhaps.

i had to read the orig post a acouple of times - i thought he 'd been charging customers more - not charging other staff! Bit weird that they fell for it.

So yes, despite the har har "astute" gags, i wd think he has to go, tho depends if this has been ongoing or if started last friday.

Get rid...

Just get rid and be done with it. Imagine being an employee and having to pay (through covert means) your superior for help and advice???

It just can't happen. The guy must be twisted to think he can treat others in this manner, and therefore he is bad for your company and bad for your staff moral. You may well witness a marked improvement around your firm just as soon as his arse exits the front door followed by your size 10 boot.

Get rid - no court in the land will back him. And he he kicks up a fuss, then threaten him with legal action on the grounds of coercing monies from employees. He could end up with a criminal record for this, so he should calm down a bit.

Agreed he's not the sort of person you want in your organisation, but new legislation has just come into force that sets out a pretty rigid procedure to follow when dismissing staff - if you don't follow it, the dismissal is automatically unfair, thereby exposing you to a large claim for compensation. Best to phone up an employment lawyer for 30 minutes advice and save yourself from an unjust liability.

Re the suggestion that he's "coerced" money - that's not quite what the post says (although it may be what happened) so I'd be wary of making accusations of criminal conduct.
