just as we were picking up a a buoy at Portscatho we caught a mackeral and the flipping line got dragged into the prop so we lost it and the fishing line then the kettle started whistling and mayhem ruled!
know the feeling !! Not so much catching fish, but when we were 3 miles off Cap Finisterre, quietly very relieved that we were motoring in flat calm, I spotted that the bilge pump was running. Further investigation revealed water pishing in from the exhaust mixer box.
It had a screw in plug supposedly for draining the system, which had worked loose and disappeared into the bilge. Wooden bung knocked in and braced with a wooden spatula from the galley worked a treat.
Heading into Chichester Harbour from a great weekend in the Solent - oil pressure warning sounded and engine stopped in the middle of a huge group of unforgiving racing dinghys. Gasket had blown 3/4 of sump contents into the bilge.... Despite kids on board they made their displeasure known, hope they all came last !
it wasn't quites so bad, as I could stop the water ingress by closing the inlet seacock, which obviously meant shutting down the engine. We had the main up at the time, but close to zero wind. We left Goodge up on deck as look out because the vis was down to a mile, and got on with fixing the problem.
WHen I looked at the snail trail on the plotter afterwards, we had actually drifted about half a mile towards the Cape. !
I call it the domino effect. One thing goes wrong, then another, then another, etc.
I have lost count of the number of times as Skipper this has happended. It is is real test of of keeping calm, making decisions to resolve the here and now, whilst looking at the whole situation overall to guage the inter-realtionship of what the hell is going on !
Not something that can be taught in the classroom.
