I went for a school fundraising bash in town last night. Great fun.

At the end of the meal there was an auction of stuff that people had donated. Linda Smith, the comedienne hosted it all. I'd given a puter which went for way over retail, other people had given time in holiday homes, and there was some art as well, and a persian rug, and they all got sold. Therewas even a day on a sailing boat in the solent which went for a eye-watering £2000 but it's all in a good cause, yer know the sort of thing. Towards the end, a few people got into the sprit of things and quietly promised late lots to the MC and i'm afraid to say that i did this as well, and the MC dragged me on the stage.

I said that everyone had been very generous BUT the problem with many of the things at the auction for me and perhaps some others too was that we're all very busy, so haven'talways got the time for new hols here and there, and also the art and the rug are a bit of a faff to cart back home, and then where will you put all this extra stuff? As a result, I announced that my donation and the final lot at the auction would be *nothing at all*, very convenient and no trouble at all for anyone - and i started the bidding at a hundred quid for the aforementioned *nothing*. The auctioneer got straight into it, and the bids shot up and away, eventually topping out at 800quid! Which must be a bit gutting for some of the art which only went for £700. I ought to be locked up. However, i did get a special thankyou for my kind donation.

TCM,

Funnily enough a school "auction" got me back into sailing.

Many years ago I bid for a weekend sailing at Abersoch that a sailor father had put up as a lot. Had a fantastic weekend. It was my wife's introduction to sailing (always too wary to go out with me) and she became totally addicted. So much so that we bought our first yacht the following spring (a Twister).

The original weekend cost me a couple of hundred quid but in reality it has ended up costing me many tens of thousands. This week it's a new cooker!

5 or 6 years back i gave a day's sailing on the solent to a PTA auction, got about £200. poor s*ds picked a miserable damp day but they didn't complain. nice easy way of raising money doing what i would have done anyway. it cost me a box of cup-a-soup and a few slices of bread!

..would get owt for nowt. I'm allowed to say that, Mrs Enstone hails from there.

Sounds like a damn fine idea, sure beats the Xmas pud that I won at the last race night I attended.

Re: nice gesture

You obviously have a talent which is born from a Region famous for such achievements!

Look North are running a competition for Yorkshireman of the Year - carry on like this and you may well get nominated:))
