I love sailing and most of the time I have a smile on my face. On Saturday I smiled so much my face hurt!
We left Cardiff just before low tide and had a nice sail up to the mouth of the Avon. That is where the smiling really started, we continued to sail up the river. We were a little too early so the river was pretty narrow. Tacking up the river was amazing. We lost count of the times we hit the mud and went around 360 degrees, being moved off by the stream. People on the bank were standing and staring, I'm sure they thought we were mad. At one point, between Pill and Sea Mills we went from hard on the wind to goose winging and back to hard on the wind in about two minutes.
I know we are not the first to sail the whole way but it was a very satisfying. We arrived at the suspension bridge just as the first lock opened with two trip boats and the Matthew so missed all traffic as planned. It was a great sail and I recommend it to everyone.
I would not recommend too much celebration if you plan to leave at 6am the next morning and sail back with a F5-6 against the tide!
