OK, you wanted to know how the sea trial went, so here goes.

Got to Falmouth on Friday night and looked at the forecast......didn't look too good but thought "what the hell" I'm only in the Carrick Roads so it will be fine" and it was.

Saturday , up with the lark and up to the marina office to ask if they would open the fuel berth and fill me with diesel........felt strange asking for that after years of carting jerry cans. Started up the two green machines and out of the berth to the fuel dock. Filled up and paid a very reasonable bill......by now the smiles are getting wider and I'm not out the marina yet. Gentle run down the penryn river and out past the docks......by now my ever faithful wing man Adrian the Volvo Guru has his earmuffs on and his head stuffed well into Audacious engine bay. All looking good except a minor water leak which he sorted there and then. "Open her up a bit" says Ade......so forward went the throttles, a lovely whistle from the turbos and the speed picked up. Now poor old girl is a bit arse heavy with those lumps in and I don't mean SWMBO either! So legs in tabs down and away she went. Speed climbing steadily, bow came down as she hit the plane. Trimmed the tabs right off and a bit of leg out. 21Kn- 23Kn and still climbing. by now we are pointing up the Truro river with the wind on the nose and still the log is climbing - 25Kn and the rev counters are at 3400 with 500 revs to go. This looks good and the boat feels so stable. Throttles hard to the stops now and she revs to about 3750 and hits 27.5-28 knots. We ease her back a bit to a nice 24-25knot cruising at 3400 and have a play. Pressures and Temperatures all looking spot on what the book says.

Callisto is a very happy bunny.......it wasn't breaks in the cloud on saturday allowing the sun through, that was lighting up falmouth it was the beaming smile coming from the helm and shining off my foredeck. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best bit yet, three engine hours just playing around and the fuel gauge hardly moved! My smile is getting wider by the minute.

Got a few little tweaks to do and to get used to a sooty transom which the petrols didn't give me, but maybe in a flat sea and with a bit less fuel and water on board I'll get that elusive 30Kn.

So there you are Forumites.......Audacious is not just a twin diesel, shes a working, living, breathing twin diesel with the cruising speed I hoped for and the top speed I expected. One very happy Callisto. Just hope we get a decent summer to get out there and use her.

Good to see Forumite DellQuay who came aboard for a look. Sorry to CliffDale as I didn't get over to see you in Port Pendennis but as you may have guessed, I was out playing!

Kev B, Hope the Yarmouth trip was fun and you got the message from Gary.

Thanks again to all Forumites who have helped along the way with advice and info and also to those who have just shown an interest.

Anyone coming down my way, the beer is always cold and the welcome warm.

Cheers All

Hi Jeff,

Yes, got the message from Gary. Really glad it all came together.

The pictures from your previous post look great and I'm sure 30 knots isn't too far off.

Well done.

Kevin.

Congratulations! ... i know exactly how you feel, 'Muda was the same when i fitted the 'blue babies'..... You'll still be grinning next time you fill up when you compare with petrol! and the best bit is no carrying those jerry cans!

28 knots in the Truro River? You must be mad, I hope you had it totally to yourself, your wake would have even upset the ducks. Isn't there a speed limit there? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Not anything so grand. These were a pair of AD31B's 130HP that I spent the winter overhauling. If they were KADS I would have been up at about 35Kn.

Very pleased with the result though.

This was way before the 8 knot marker at Turnaware Bar.

No way would I be doing 28kn in the river. I'm very strict about that cos having sat on the visitor pontoon at both Turnaware and Ruan and been thrown all over the place by maniacs doing silly things up there I always stick to the limits.

Usually I open the throttles as I pass the marker at Turnaware heading towards the sea and then close them again at the 8 knot marker off Trefusis.

I go astern of raggies too and give the a wide berth. Usually get a friendly wave as a result rather than a shaken fist!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Am I forgiven?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes! Although you are talking about being in the Truro River Authority area, according to my chart you are in the River Fal and not the River Truro as you stated, thus I am no longer in shock and horror!

Thats the trouble with us Cornish boys, always getting ahead of ourselves. You are correct that I hadn't reached the Truro Harbour Authority area.

No speed limits in the Carrick Roads or the Fal up to Turnaware. What do you sail so I can look out for you and give you a courteous "wide berth" when I'm at speed.

I haven't been to Falmouth for many years and as I always try to get over to Brittany form the Solent these days, you are unlikely to have to concern yourself!
