Going to order 60 mtrs 8mm cal chain to go with Lofrans Clipper windlass and locker is going to be tight so was thinking of routing chain to forward locker under bunk in frd cabin, anyone done similar.
Yup. The Fulmar I had 8' of had a simple hole through the chain locker bulkhead. Chain flowed out fine, but a body was needed to pull a suitable quantity through when anchor raising.
Don't overlook the fact that the Fulmar is a wet boat and capable of serious submarining in short waves, so all that weight forward will be noticeable - and all the time, whereas the utility of the additional 20 m of chain will rarely if ever be used.

LOL!!!! Well, well, that's a new one on me, but then I've only sailed mine for circa 47000 miles including UK/Med and Med/Caribbean transats, sometimes in seriously lumpy weather!! Do you seriously mean that, or is this a wind-up? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
If you believe it, I'd be more than grateful to hear your reasons/sources/experience!
Oh, and we carry TWO 35lb CQR's, EACH with 50 metres of 8mm chain. So Beserksail, I'd ignore this chap and go right ahead with your planned chain, it'll be fine! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I carry 50 metres of 8mm chain in my Fulmar's standard chain locker with no trouble in stowing and no adverse handling effects. I used to have 60 metres but knocked off 10 meters when I renewed, haven't used it all but you never know when it might be needed.
you should be fine.
I would be interested to how you get on with locker modification it looks as though it is the only way to be able to use a power windlass. I use an anchorman and have to feed the chain into the locker manually.
I am looking at making a light stainless steel hopper in anchor locker leading to a 3" tube into forward locker in forward cabin, this being lower down and further aft than anchor locker. I will just have to keep the run fair. nothing ventured nothing gained.
I am in the process of fitting an electric 'on deck' horizontal windlass and once I have done that will replace the (original) 15 fathoms of chain with 40 metres of chain and then 20m of anchorplait.
This solution will be lighter than 60m of chain.
I have seen on other boats an arrangement where the rope only is stored in the forward locker simply by making a small cut out in the locker door an another in the hatch to the forward locker - admittedly it would require crew intervention to use it and stow it, but how often is the rope actually going to be used, not often I suggest.
I was actually wondeering about tying the rope up in a loop inside the locker which may be a neater solution an still achieve teh objective of getting the chain as low down as possible.
