En passant, FC mentioned that the oilies in his super heated wet locker had lost their proofing.

I had wondered why my going down the news agents goretex jacket was no longer keeping out water. Its kept in the boiler cupboard, temp about 90deg on a good day.

Resiting said garment in carport and applying Nikwax have restored it back to its previous impermeability!

Many thanks, jacket cost £20 would have broken my heart to scrap it.

I read that post as well and was surprised. Bought new oilies recently and checked the instructions (instructions - for waterproofs????) - says "Do not keep in a heated environment"

Yes, I noted the earlier post and had a pang of guilt.
Kept my wondertex waterproofs in a nice dry warmed, or heated cupboard.

Had a monster row with the well known manufacturer when the proofing failed after a season - they replaced without a quibble.

I do feel a bit quilty - just the replacement was not the same colour - but what the heck

Hi there,

The following link from the Goretex website suggests machine washing followed by a warm tumble dry then a spray on DWR
(Durable Water Repellent polymer)

http://www.gore-tex.com/remote/Satellite/content/care-center/washing-instructions

The link below explains the DWR in more detail, particularly the problem known as Wet Out

“Wet out” can put a real damper on your day. That’s when liquid saturates your garment’s outer fabric layer above the GORE-TEX® membrane, leaving you feeling damp and clammy - as if your garment were leaking, even when it’s not.
