Can S.S tanks be successfully cleaned after holding petrol or diesel, to use for potable water?

Yes, not uncommon for the wrong tank to get filled with diesel & they have to be cleaned. sorry cant help with how to though, google may help

Steam cleaning is very effective. I know of a case where a bag water tank was inadvertently filled with diesel, cleaned out only using detergent and water was reasonably effective, although for a bag it is relatively easy to achieve the necessary turbulence.

Where would you take a tank to get it steam cleaned? - I don't know anyone who owns one.

I have had the smallish diesel tank in my former boat steam cleaned twice because of diesel bug. Took it out and brought it to a boat yard. I think most boat or ship yards do this regularly.

Every garage that deals with trucks and most that do cars will have one. Cost of doing it should be very low as it only takes a few minutes.

I have a large stainless toilet holding tank that is not being used for it's intended purpose.... it would make an ideal extended fresh water tank. But just can't bring myself to clean it and connect it up!!!!!!
