Fuel tank guage float

Hi All

On Friday I dropped the float guage into the fuel tank (no fuel was in there as it has recently been cleaned out) and having just spent 2 days trying to fish it out through the small guage hole, I've given up. Will it be OK to leave in there if I fit a new one ?

I'd rather refill first, that should make the recovery a bit easier I guess.
Particularly if there's any metal part in it which could be attracted by a magnet.
