I presently have a gravity fed fuel system whereby the fuel outlet consists of a female threaded outlet welded to the tank, into which is screwed a shut off valve, then the copper pipe to the filter/engine.

Although the tank has a small sump with drain valve, the present arrangement effectively means that the fuel is drawn right from the bottom of the tank.

I want to install a length of copper pipe to extend say 50mm above the bottom of the tank.

The question is - what sort of fitting do I need in order to achieve this?, I'm effectively wanting to form a seal to the base of the tank at mid point on a short length of copper pipe

I'm sure its a simple, standard fitting but I have looked at BES and can't find what I'm picturing in my mind.

If the above makes any sense, all help gratefully appreciated!

Hi Gavin. Two options I can think of:
1) get a male threaded plug, the same thread and material, as the female at the bottom of the tank, drill a hole in it and have somone silver-solder/weld the right piece of pipe (ie material and protruding the right amout) into it. 50mm may be too much. You will loose a lot of volume that way. The risk is if the materials are all so different that they may set up corrision (not highly likely); or
2) seal off the bottom outlet (same plug as 1 minus the hole) and put a fitting of your choice at the top of the tank with a pipe going almost to the bottom. This is more work and will require some sort of pump to start the syphon which I'm not sure you have. Andrew.

You don't say what thread the tank fitting is. It may be that you can find a compression fitting that will fit it which will attach the pipe - drill through to allow the pipe to extend into the tank before squeezing the olive.

Rob.
