Fuel Tank Cleaning

I've finally bitten the bullet to clean out the fuel tanks - lovely job!! The tanks are steel not SS and the builders original inside paint has lifted and needs to be removed but there is no sign of rusting.The question is what to do after they are cleaned - should they be repainted or left bare? If they are repainted what with? Opinions please.

I have steel tanks and I've grit blasted and painted with Sigma Cover 300, but I've not relaunched nor filled them yet, so to early to tell how successful it's been.
I did contact Sigma and they assured me that it was suitable, so the only real worry is surface preparation, there's only so much you can do with the inside of a fuel tank.
To an extent my hopes rest on the fact that coal tar epoxy is made from the same stuff as diesel and has a limited tolerance to surfaces with oily residue.. but that could be wishful thinking

I have had two central heating oil tanks made from steel, unpainted internally. Provided the fuel contains no water they will last indefinitely. Unfortunately the fuel we buy may contain water, or atmospheric water vapour may condense inside the tank. The answer in both cases is to drain/draw off the water occasionally. Your steel tank will then last forever!

If you really want to paint inside, then the suggestion to grit blast is the way to go, followed by epoxy primer and top coat.

Southerly certainly fitted unpainted steel tanks to boats made in 1985. Bad idea as they corroded through after about 15 years and were a pain to replace. Mine went at the welds along the bottom where Vyv said problems usually appeared. It wasn't painted to I suppose 15 years would have been reasonable if Northshore had given some thought to access. So unpainted tanks can last for a few years and might be an option if they are easy to replace.
