Just repaced a fuel tank which is one of three. This is the first time that I noticed that the fuel return line returns to a CAV filter which is the first of two filters. I supose it was done this way to save having return lines to each tank and the associated valves. I have not seen any other installations done this way and am wondering if there cound be any potential problems. Given that the engine a Yanmar 3jh2e 1994 model has done 2000 hours without any probems I would not be expecting any in the future but would still be interested in opinions.

It's not ideal, but if it's worked OK for 2000 hours I guess there's no need to change it. The only vague concern might be that the fuel supplied to the engine could get warmish.

It's quite a common arrangement. Photo shows the fuel filter on my motorsailer, 2.5 litre BMC marine conversion. It's the same engine used by thousands of taxis and canal boats, most seem to be piped up the same way.

Its like that on, to my knowledge ,things like the MD11C and probably many other VP engines..

The injector leak-off is returned to the engine-mounted fuel filter on many Volvo Penta engines. But some (like my 2003T) also have a fuel return line which allows excess fuel supplied to the fuel pumps to be returned to the tank. Whether or not this is fitted may perhaps be dependent on the type of fuel pump.
