Just wondering if anyone has made their own kit to filter the fuel and back to the tank as it would seem that the sale of them are about £1,000 and I reckon you could build one for a couple of hundred. I guess the pump would be the biggest selection as it has to stir the s.... of the bottom of the tank

There is a whole thread on this with photos etc somewhere!
Search on Google including ybw in the title and you will find it.

Looks like the asap pump, which I thought would not be man enough for the job as most seem to push through at 100 lts. How have you found it for stirring up the bottom of the tank? And where do you draw off the diesel, from the tank drain?

It is a solid state fuel pump, not from ASAP. From memory draws 25 g/p/h. The second pic shows fuel tank & pick up. 90 degree angle brass connector with long copper pipe attached which drops right to the bottom of the fuel tank. Had previously a smaller racor filter on this system but decided to fit a new racor fg500 as my primary engine filter so transferred my old fleet guard system on to my polishing system. Can run anytime for hours, even when engine is running.

Sounds good. I was going to draw of the sump drain at the bottom of the tank and feed back into the filler. I know I have the dead bug bits in the bottom of the tank as they do show up in the pre filters

More like £250.

Here's how mine works ...

Holley fuel pump from Ebay £40
Baldwin water separator filter £38
Wood or metal to make a simple mount frame - I used an old turbo gas welding set mount

5 x female dripless instant connectors £15 ea £75
2 x male dripless connectors £15 ea £30
1 x 3 way tee valve £20
5 x ball vv adjacent to each dripless connector £5 ea £25
approx 5m 8mm tube and various hose clips £20
a few equal tees and other adaptors to connect to the access points

The Dripless Instant Connectors are positioned on Tank drains, pre-filter inlets, & spill return which feeds into 2 way tee where the original spill cross conn vv was.

I can now move and polish fuel in numerous directions, plus perform other tasks ...

1 Polish either tank back to either tank.
2 Adjust levels tank to tank.
3 Emergency feed one engine or drain the dregs from one tank into the other if I really get caught short.
4 Prime the pre-filters and on engine filters
5 Drain the pre-filters for element changing.
6 Blow back the fuel pick up pipe if I manage to pick up a slug of debris that blocks the pipe.
7 Empty either tank to a separate vessel if ever required.

I run the rig on each tank about an hour per month. Never had any contamination issues and I do not use additives.

Further details on my blogsite - improvements page.
