I picked up an older Honda 4 stroke which hadn't been used for some time. When I turn on the fuel supply to the carb, fuel drips out. I presume there is something stuck inside the carb - what might it be? Float? Needle? Do I need to remove the carb from the engine to sort it? Don't want to start playing about with this in case I make things worse.

Needle valve not closing properly.
could be due to one of several reasons from float stuck to a bit of dirt preventing the needle seating.

If you can easily remove the float chamber without removing the carb do so.

Watch out for little bits though like the pivot pin for the float arm and the needle itself. There may also be a tiny clip linking the needle to the float arm if its has soft tip needle.

If you have any doubts about doing it in situ then remove the carb and work on it on the bench.

If you take it off it may well be worth giving the whole carb a clean through.

Look for a diagram at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/parts.html
