I'm thinking of putting a Fuel Inspection pipe just prior to my lift pump; manly to see the presence of air or lack of fuel. I guess I could use an inline fuel filter like the picture below, but I don't actually want another filter.

Any thoughts?

I would put it after the lift pump as you have stopped attempting to suck air by that point. (otherwise, you are adding two extra joints on the low-pressure side)
An inverted "T" with an airbleed at the top could be made, or if there is a CAV filter between the lift pump and pressure pump connect something to the bleed. I was trying to find one of these bubble sensors you add to a gas bottle but they don't google.
