I am refitting the diesel tank this weekend having cleaned it, hoping that cleaning the entire diesel system will get the thing started again. While the tanks out I am fitting an electronic fuel guage, into the (mild steel) inspection plate. It needs an accurate whole cutting - how? Does anyone know a decent engineer in Warrington that might drill me a hole - take him about 2 minutes - I don't even know what kind of hole saw I'd need to buy.

Thanks

TBH for a one-off hole in mild steel I'ld get the files out and do it myself. A half hour job. An hour if you have a half-time cuppa. Quicker than driving around finding an engineering shop.

Rigger

Absolutely "spot on". I'd drill a hole and then get out my jig-saw and cut a hole to the required size. Please don't get out your oxy-cutter to cut the hole because the tank could have residual fuel/fumes and the heat could set off a catastrophic explosion. (Maybe before you do any work on the tank you should flush it out with water)
