I've been sold a cute blue liquid called Briggs & Stratton Fuel Fit which is said to prevent unleaded petrol from going off. 5ml into 5 litres or, for storage of up to a year, 15ml. Is this just Snake Oil or does it work?

Worth a try I would say.

They seem to have a lot more trouble with fuel stability in the USA than we do.
Something to do with ethanol content maybe.

"Seafoam" is their favourite additive, at least for outboards, but is not available in the Uk. Sta-Bil is also popular but likewise not available in the UK AFAIK.

I noticed the prominence of Briggs and Stratton additives when I was Googling for fuel stabilisers the other day.

Proper controlled experiment called for.

Store two batches of the same fuel under identical conditions for a couple of years. One dosed with the additive and one without. Try both in the same engine at the end of the period.

I'll be expecting to see the results posted here in late July 2012.

Even better compare fuel containing ethanol and fuel without, also compare the effectiveness of other additives esp Stabil and Seafoam.

Correction: Stabil is avaialable in the UK. Seafoam via eBay too
