I am installing a 12v pump and a fuel filter between the main fuel tank in the keel and a "day tank" at a higher level. Can anybody tell me, does it matter whether I put the filter on the inlet or outlet side of the pump ?

If you are installing a Racor (which I would recommend as a primary filter) or similar, it can go on the suction side.

If the pump can handle the extra suction required, yes you can do it on the inlet side. It makes bleeding easier if you fit it on the pumping side and pumps don't mind the extra resistance on this side at all. Filters on the suction side can more easily cause problems because air is sucked into the system when anything goes wrong. I prefer a very simple mash-type-inline course pre-filter to protect the pump and have the course and fine fuel filter on the pressure side of a pump.
I do like the Racor as well, but the old Lucas/CAV 296 is a very good and cheap alternative.
