I am shortly going to change the fuel filters on my Volvo 2001. The primary water separator filter is tucked away under the fuel tank in the cockpit locker. I believe it is a CAV type - it currently has a Fram C1191-PL filter in it.

Do I just need a new filter or are there seals that need replacing as well?

How does one change the filters in these units?

Any advice/guidance would be welcome. If I get it wrong I'm going to end up with diesel in the cockpit locker and bilge!

Many thanks,

Ed

yep, do the seals at the same time, they'll come with the filter. there should be a fuel shut off before the filter (don't forget to turn it back on when you bleed the system).

drain the filter bowl into an ice cream tub first, and dispose of properly. keep the tub handy on the boat, with a spare set of filters. if in any doubt, get a kindly mechanic to show you how to do it for the first time. it's worth it.

happy boating, regards, steve.

Agree with Aztec, as well as the large dia rubber rings which you should renew there were smaller o rings which sealed the central shaft and bled screw. The large O rings sometimes remain in the top alloy casting and you need a small point tool to ease the old ring out.
Clean the separator with lint free cloth and reassemble. The trick is to be assured of how you are going to bleed through the system afterwards.
The CAV 296 is a world wide well known filter with many alternative element manufaucturers, elements were even available in Sarawark and Sabah in Boreno in the 70s.
