I know we have all thought of this, but when you do the sums and write down the answers it starts to look rather alarming. Assume your fuel capacity is 2500ltrs @ 40p a full tank costs £1000. In 2006 this could cost £3000. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

But what numpty pays 40p, and hardly anyone can hold 2500 ltres anyway. Theres always the tanker glad to come for anything over 500 ltres, even less. Are you sure you have a boat?? Surely you would know where to buy fuel at the right price!! Or maybe not worried about price. But seems so!!

Oh dear! You've missed the point 3x might be. The absolute figures are not relevant. At $56 a barrel I wouldn't be so sure.

Not sure what barrels have to do with it. It's what you pay at the pump that counts, if tankage is around 2500 litres Dutch diesel is around 20 odd pence and CI not much different. Not much of a difference with that range. Even much cheaper. It's only the little guys with short range who are going to feel the difference. Or the lazy gits /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Because the price of crude filters through to the pump price nad I am sure you know that..
There is no way Holland or CI are charging 20p currently

Blimey, perceptive, are'nt we? Where do you get this 3x stuff from anyway? Road fuel costs 85p per litre so your 40p per litre is more like 2x. Whatever, I tend to think that anyone who can afford a boat with 2500 litre fuel capacity can probably afford the difference

Yes but marine will attract a premium. Can afford but still understands value. But could we try to debate the point!

I'm afraid all the Numpty's down here in Falmouth Marina now pay 40p a litre.......

If you think thats bad look at the costs running on petrol. With waterside outlets charging nearly a quid a litre and a litre going in no time at all it does get frightening.
Forget the cost and enjoy the boat I say. So I'm off to burn 9 gallons an hour. Ta Rah

But then your not looking for 2500 ltrs or even 500 I suspect. I paid 25p at the fuel barge last summer in Falmouth, not checked it out since. Newlyn road tanker was 20p last time I was there and course theres also the little ship yard at Fowey to check out. Shop around a bit, you will be surprised at the difference, Oh and ask what there rates are for 250, 500 ltrs etc.

Have you considered clubbing together and getting a tank trailer that holds 500+ litres. You may then be able to buy at cheaper rates.
I always find it galling when peeps on here talk about prices in the 20s when with our boat (tank holds 360L) we normally pay around 40.
Hlb only does it to make those of us with small ones, feel inadequate. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Fowey used to have a barge but this has now gone. You mentioned the Little Ship yard. Where is this? I assume from your note that it's possible to tie up there to re fuel. Please advise.

Thank you

Yes the fuel barge went bust. Across the river from Fowey at whatsit called. Theres a visitors pontoon ferry landing and more importantly a pub. Just a few yards away up stream there is a ship yard with slipway for trawlers etc, also a rickety pontoon and fuel pump. Not used him this year, but he's not unreasonable and will probably do a deal. But for 2500 ltr or there abouts, I'd simply order a tanker from the local fuel depot, or sus out where the fishy men fill up and join them. I cant carry anywhere near that amount. But I have mt famous 45 gallon oil drum down the celler, originally installed for going to Britany, cos I only got 150 gallon fuel tanks. So I ask what the price is for x and y amounts, the 40 becomes 38 or 36p or 32 etc. Makes a big difference on even 500 ltrs. But also the extra 45 gallon means I can skip the extortionate places and go some place else. A little known barge is Bouncer just off Yacht Haven Plymouth, filled up there once, he only realy does little ships and things. but it's a bit of a fag for 300-500 ltrs and not much different in price from the marina. Well worth while for 2500 though. Trouble with Plymouth is, I've never found a convinient quay to get a tanker to, but I'd bloody well find one to save £10000000000!!

Thanks Haydn, I haven't tried the fuel barge as yet because opinion down here is divided on wether the fuel from the barge is clean enough. Had one or two peeps say they have had probs after fuelling at the barge.

Think you will find that a barge selling to comercial boats and ships have to ceriffy the fuel as OK. They give you a piece of paper and some times a sample bottle to test. To get near 25p at the fuel barge (might be dearer now.) You do have to kick him a few times!!

Few years back I use to draw about 100-150 gallons a week off the fuel barge..

I never had a problem with dirty fuel, lots of boats get fuel related problems but dare I suggest that this is more down to bad house keeping rather than where the fuel was sourced from..

Of course i suppose there are always exceptions , but as i said i never had any problems with dirty fuel off the barge..
