Does anybody know the typical fuel consumption of a Volvo 2001 with a sail drive?

The boat is an MG C27 that's fairly new to me. I'm trying to work out her endurance under power to put on my CG66.

Thanks,

Ed

10 hp engine likely to be 1/2 gallon per hour flat out
(rule of thumb 20hp/hour/gallon)
as you are not likely to run at full power all the time so how you use the engine will be of more importance but for working out range etc this will err on right side

I discovered with delight that my Volvo MD11, after reconditionning one year ago, now consumes less than 1,5 l/h. (over a full year).
Of course, as I prefer to sail, the engine never is used flat out, rather at 1500 - 1800 rpm. giving me 5 - 5,5 knots on a calm sea, or in the harbour.

V2001 but not saildrive. I expect to use approx 3/4 ltre ph with similar size boat at 1800-2000rpm giving me 5kts through the water. However, can depend on sea conditions and if I am heading directly into wind.

Fuel consumption is directly related to HP. Average well maintained diesel consumes roughly 200 grammes of fuel per horsepower per hour.

Check what the HP of the engine is at the boat's "optimum speed" - multiply the HP by 0.2 and this will give you approximate cruising consumption in litres per hour.

Maximum HP available multiplied by 0.2 will give you an approximation of the maximum fuel consumption if you ever have to go at full chat for any length of time.

The second calculation is worth doing. The difference on my own boat is 10 litres per hour. i.e. at 6 knots she uses 5 litres per hour - at 10 knots she uses just over 15 litres per hour!

At "optimum speed" 60 litres lasts 12 hours and moves the boat 72 miles.

"Flat out" the same 60 litres would only last 4 hours and move the boat 40 miles.

It helps if you know these things before you go very far from port!!!

Best regards )
