So I have just found a tech sheet for my boat. It quotes 40lph.
it’s a 23 ft fourwinns 235 vista with a 5.8 petrol cobra engine.
now it has a 200l tank.
does this sound realistic. If so are those cruising figures. So that means if we go travelling up the coast every hour it’s £100 in fuel. And after 4 hours I’d have to get more fuel ??

Sounds reasonable to me although I have a different engine. Kad300 diesel but it does 25ish knots at 42lph per engine. You could pootle at 6knots or so and save fuel.

That sounds about the expected sort of consumption for cruising speed for that motor and boat - might be a bit less or a bit more in reality - depending on how loaded with weight you are, how you trim the drive, what speed you do etc.

I dont think it will need super unleaded - should be fine on normal unleaded.

Just seems daft to have a tank that only lasts 4 hours

in reality , in that boat, how often are you really going to be travelling for hours on end at cruising speed? An hour at cruising speed will feel like a very long time, and if cruising speed is 20-25 knots, then thats a fair distance in a small boat.

I think its actually a 93 boat , well so far I have added 140l to a empty tank as I drained it , so ill soon find out as getting 20l in my can a day

I cant find anything that says that
specs for all four winns 1993 boats can be found here

FastFacts1993.pdf (fourwinns.com)

looks like they didnt make a 235 vista in 1993, it was a 245 vista.

On page 45 you can see the fuel flow data (presumably in american gallons per hour rather than european) for different speeds

Looks like at 25mph it would consume ~41 litres per hour - assuming I have selected the correct engine combination when I looked at the tables

It also says it has a 75 gallon (us gallon again I presume?) tank = 283 litres.

100% it’s a 235 vista. The year May be wrong

welcome to the boating world !
yes indeed these are really sad figures,

but as mentioned above this is not a cruiser for doing big distances,
enjoy the boat for doing small trips, and watersports , skiing ?

The consumption is dictated by the amount of power you demand. I think your engine came in versions producing from 235 to 290 hp depending on version.

If you demand 200 horses to work, you´ll have to feed them. Or, in other words, if running your boat at a speed where the effort to drive it vs. the speed is low, the comsumption per nm or hours will be lower. Also keep in mind that the hours spend on board without running the engine (anchored, swimming, sun bathing, enjoying cold snacks) will be free (fuel wise).

It is a planing hull so the sweet spots are just above idle and at lowest speed where it is at a stable plane. Thus giving it enough throttle to get on plane quickly, then reducing throttle until it remains on a true plane, will produce economical cruising.

Weight is your enemy so keep it light by removing unneeded gear.

The engine is Ford based, marinized by OMC. OMC filed for bankruptcy 22 December 2000 and parts are becoming still harder (impossible) to find, so keep a close eye on things. Due diligence is crucial.

Repowering commonly is not economically feasible. Would involve a complete engine+sterndrive+instruments replacement - and then some.

I reckon ballpark a 23ft boat with that engine is going to be capable of 25knts for 40l/h.

Trust me, 4 hours at 25knts in that boat and you'll want a month off boating.

What are you expectations, where are you going etc?

If it’s any consolation that’s fairly reasonable consumption (41l) compared to a 2 stroke o/b, I’m at 37l/hr cruising at 20 knots, 4,000 revs on a 125hp Mercury on a 20’ Shetland. At least you’re not throwing a 1/3 of your fuel into the ocean as some of us do!!!! If you need more range plumb in another tank, it’s rare in the uk to get a weekend where it’s possible to exploit the full capabilities of a boat’s range on the plane anyway.
