Having read the poll "in the other place" regards amounts of folks use , sat down with log and did some basic calculations.
A 35ft flybridge 8 tonne boat with 2 x 200HP shaft drive engines and usually carrying far to much pointless junk most of the time.

Cruising mostly at displacement speeds with the very occasional short fast run.
Mainly coastal or estuary trips with several freshwater holiday cruises on inland water ways.
The results were suprising to me, at least.
Total engine hours since boat purchase 202. Fuel used 2140 litres.

Approx 12 litres per hour for both engines.

Not so quite so scary ?

Obviously we're doing the same sort of cruising, probably around 11 tons though with 2 X 306hp and average 9l/h.
16-18 knot planing run - 54l/h

17 tonnes, 48ft.

810NM run over 61 hours (only got her at the end of June) and 5685l of fuel bought. Tanks still half full or so.

I'm running at around 120l/h quick cruise (17/18kts) and probably more like 80l/h slow cruise (12kts).

Of course litres/ gallons per hour is correct way to estimate marine endurance or range
The motor car method of working out a boats endurance in miles per gallon will at some point end up with you being towed. .

I think what you say is more valid for displacement speeds where a couple of knots tide can make a considerable difference to how long it takes to get somewhere. At say 20 or 30 knots not so much.

I used almost exactly that amount of fuel during my 4 week summer holiday last year...
