Does anyone have a rule of thumb for calculating fuel /diesel required. We have an Antares 760 / fuel tank capacity 220lts / engine Volvo 200hp/ Cruising speed 16kts. The planned journey is from the River Orwell to St Katherines London. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You can also estimate fuel usage from the average specific fuel consumption for a diesel engine @ 0.24kg/kwh. Assuming specific gravity of diesel is about 0.9 and engine is developing about 150hp at 16knots, then the engine is consuming about 40 litres per hour or 8.8 galls per hour. Thats equivalent to 1.8nm per gallon. Calculate the distance for the trip and you can estimate the fuel usage

Not sure there is a rule of thumb. Last week my boat was doing 22 knots flat out, before lift out it was doing 12 knots. A few years ago, with less anifouling build up it was doing 25 Knots. So a vast variation in fuel burn. By the way it's supposed to do 27 knots. Halve the calculations and make sure you get there.

No mention of hull design in these calculations either... It does say it's only approximate though.
