Could anyone help, I need the throttle grip starting position please, the grip that turns has an arrow and a raised dot, the fixed part that you line up with shows two opposing arrows with fast and slow no start position shown, I have by chance got it running a couple of times and runs very well, unable now to reach previous owner, but saw it running. Have workshop manual that doesn't help, searching for a owners manual. Can anyone HELP Please. Engine is a 1981 model two stroke. I'm using 50.1 mix, carb all cleaned out in altra sonic cleaner. This being a fairly small engine I don't know what the compression should achieve when it is hot.

Does this give a hint?

He seems to open the throttle about 1/4 turn and claims to be a cold start.
Some of those motors suffer from a leaking oil seal on the crank bearing which decreases crankshaft pressure. This usually manifests itself as being difficult to start.
Owners manuals seem to be very hard to come by on the 'net.

Thanks for that, it does look like he is moving the throttle grip so that the arrow on the grip is aligned between the two opposing arrows on the satic indicator. I do have a problem with the bendix recoil starter, I had a lot better result this afternoon winding a cord around the starter cup the one with the cut outs on top of the engine, also with the hood off, you can turn the engine by hand to just before TDC wrap the cord around three times and pull, it's less effort than using the recoil starter, I'm pretty sure the one on the engine is all but knackered, I have contacted www browns point with the part number they show for a replacement, when it starts it runs sweet, I will connect up a tachometer when in the river and adjust the idle screw when in gear to correct any rpm error it might have, if I do it in the tub I use,it will empty it in a thrice. I was also looking for a clip on utube, luckier than I.

Thanks for that, I'm waiting on a 10mm box spanner, so I'm able to release the bendix, I will then give it a overhaul, I'm used to mending antique clocks so I will measure the spring and change it for a new one, I found a plastic washer that is damaged and pops out, they look quite basic overall. Got a new head gasket as I want to check the head, once started it runs very well, fairly quite as well, I didn't pay much for it, so all to gain, if I get it to start easily. It's for my 9ft grip dingy, I have a good Yamaha 2B engine, but I found it to be under powered on a blustery day and the waves are any more then like a mill pound

Ours was a bit of a pig to start, but once I established how to do it it was ok. The most important thing for me was establishing how long to wait after turning the fuel before trying to start it;too little time equalled insufficient fuel, too much led to the Carb' flooding and a wet plug. If using an external tank try to work out how hard/how much priming of the fuel bulbs was necessary.Throttle setting was about one quarter to a third open. If it flooded, fuel off throttle wide open, pull like hell until it fired. A new plug worked wonders as well.

Still working on it, What has helped is regapping the spark plug a little from 28 to 30 thou, starting now within three pulls, the bendix jambs, so I'm using the notched plate on top of the engine, which all engines have, the bendix I will remove in the next 2or 3 days and re service it, then hopefully that will be the final touch.
