I have just been out to check on the boat, (nice sunny day) got the covers off, pulled the engine hatch, and discovered that the coolant hoses are all frozen solid.
I obviously didn't get enough antifreeze into the system when I winterised it a few weeks ago!
I've removed the hoses to allow for any further expansion of ice, and got some heat going in there, just gonna have to keep my fingers crossed!

any damage is donne when the water frezzes, so if theres no damage now, you should be OK. Next time use an antifreeze hydometer! And leave the antifreeze in all year. Top up with antifreeze mixture all year, then you are sure. Just a tip, hope its all ok.

I got a greenhouse heater in Homebase (DIY store) for about £28. It's a fan type with thermostat and is supposedly suitable for damp conditions. Only had it a couple of days but it certainly kept the frost away.

Unfortunately my engine cooling system is a raw water type, I got the mix right but I don't think that the quantity was enough

The Damage done by the ice consists of ..
(1) A cracked manifold (possibly weld repair)
(2) A core plug pushed out on lower left hand side of engine block behind engine mounting.
Does anyone know of a boat mech who could carry out repairs at a reasonable cost in the Yorks. area?
Engine is a '90 Mercruiser 4.3Ltr. V6
Any help appreciated as always

Depends on where you go boating. If its anywhere near N. wales, I can put you in touch with some good guys. Nearer Manchester, you could try Bill Higham. Nearer Rochdale you could try MGA Watersports.

Repairs

Sorry to hear of your damage, however you should consider yourself lucky. I would say that you managed to get away with it quite lightly.
Just put the core plug back in, take the manifold off and take to local welders who are probably just as competent to weld it than any marine engineers.

Good luck.......

If you are mechanical minded and can take it off i know someone who could weld (ally or cast iron) If you give me a size of the plug(probley imperial] I have a source .The plug then only needs tapping in [with a socket] with hylomar.

You could try Pennine Marine in Skipton, I used them about 10 years ago, it has changed owner since but I have been and they appear v professional.

Failing that try Windermere Aquatic, I think the rates are cheaper in winter.

Dave,

Try Mark at MJ Marine.

He's from Hull, so perhaps not too far away, and a mercruiser expert.

His mobile's 07947 068451
