Boat came out end of Nov & I carried out winterising of the engine & draining fresh water tank. Even remembered to pump some antifreeze mix thro the heads .I meant to disconnect hot water connections to the calorifier & drain into the bilges but didn't do it. Well freeze ups don't usually happen till the new year do they ? Has anyone experienced a burst calorifier ??

Often.

I looked after a fleet of hire craft in the north of Scotland,

They all had 6 gallon copper calorifiers.

One autumn we were a bit late in winterising the boats.

In one night we lost six calorifiers out of about 15.

Some had split at the vertical seams, some had split the sides.
We found that they could be repaired by brazing the damage.

I managed to repair five of the six calorifiers.

All the repaired ones worked fine for many years.

I don't know what metal your calorifier is made from but at the cost of them it is well trying a repair if one has been damaged.

Cheers

and a happy new year.

Thanks for the encouraging news re repairs. She,s a new boat so am not totally familiar with her but I suspect that the calorifier was the lowest part of the water system therefore still full after the pump ran dry & quite a fair chance of a bust seam. Shall likely find out on Friday.Happy New Year !!!
