Pretty sure it's possible. Does anybody know anything about possible routes, depths etc? Sources of information perhaps.

Thanks.

it is certainly possible ,BUT those currents on the Danube are going to demand a fairly powerful motor for quite a few hundred miles.Main-Donau canal from Kelheim and join the Rhine at Mainz. It may be possible to cross the Ukraine ,by Kiev and through Belarus to Poland coming out at Gdansk, there may be problems with permits on this route .

Formalities for Poland would not be a problem - it's EU. Formalities for Ukraine should be a bit more challenging, but almost certainly do-able, though you'd have to be careful you weren't deemed to have imported your yacht (if I remember correctly, for Russia that would be the case automatically if your yacht stayed more than 6 months, Ukraine is probably similar, it usually is).

But the thought of getting a yacht through Belarus Customs boggles the mind. I know someone who had big difficulties when leaving because he didn't declare his wedding ring on entry! On the other hand, border officers there are often helpful - they let me in on two occasions without a visa... But taking a yacht through would be a different kettle of fish. Remember the American balloonists a few years ago who accidentally strayed into Belarus airspace 'cos the wind was blowing the wrong way? They were shot down by a MIG, and killed. In other words, the authorities in Belarus aren't really used to people travelling by unconventional methods.

Don't know about depths along the way.

Most direct method is via entry into Volga River ... up through various locks and systems to the Niva River to exit at St.Petersburg.

BUT ... a) bandit territory through most of it .... b) Russian Customs and individual interpretations ..... c) sheer cost and bribes !!!

Wonderful scenery though .... and trip of a lifetime.

Depths .... Various Volga Ships of more draft than most yachts ever look at sail the Volga and its service tributaries ....

If you want a good read try 'The Incredible Voyage of Jack de Crow' which details a journey from Calais to the Black Sea via the Rhine (In a Miror dinghy). Given the Rhine can be used to access nothwards and, I'm fairly sure, eventually via other waterways to Rotterdam it must be possible to get across to the Black Sea.

When I was in Helsinki in 1992, there were at least two ships preparing to go to Petersburg and then via the Lena, Ladogo Lake and a canal, possibly the Moskwa to the Volga. There is a canal from the Volga to the Don, which flows into the Black Sea. The trip was quite a succes, but during the trip they had some russian crew members.Of course it should be possible to do this trip the other way round. I know that the owner of one of the ships was british and a member of the cruising association. The Baltic Section of this Association most likely will have more information available.
