Currently bending my head around the next in a never-ending series of problems to solve on my boat and that is galley layout, thought i had it down; going from the main bulkhead down the starboard side it was, sink, fridge under what would be the drainer then a large chest of drawers then the cooker then bin by the companionway bulkhead but realised because of the shape of the hull and with 6" of insulation around it; leaving the fridge near to the main bulkhead would give me a usable volume little more than a rubics revenge (remember them eh? theres one for the kids).

So still wanting to have the cooker aft because of size and shape (and the hulls at its most volumunious) i was thinking about placing the fridge next to it right where the bin was going to go by the companionway bulkhead giving me a decent volume fridge via a top loading door but this means having the cooker and fridge next to each other be it with 6" of insulation inbetween. Having poured over the westerly layouts both old and not so old a good few like the fulmar, griffon and konsort have the cooler box next to the cooker anyway?

Will this be creating problems?

Any Thoughts......................................

No problem, we have the same but without your extra insulation - how long each day is the oven actually on? About four times a week on our cruises! We have a vent top and bottom in the fridge freezer compartment and a computer fan blowing across the compressor fins, but I can't see you'll have any problems.

Our kitchen at home was like that, we did make sure the hot air from the back of the oven was vented away from the fridge.
On a yacht fridge you don't need the fridge compressor under the fridge so it should be easier still.

I have my fridge next to the oven and as others have said have had no problems, however make sure you have good ventilation for the fridge

Fridge freezer? One can but dream :(

I say fridge freezer more an insulated box with a super chilled compartment in it, i may have made that sound too good, but as i'm planning to fit a shed load of lead; the current-creating greatness form and so want to add a few modern amenities.

Sounds like a plan Mike, and cool galley btw, have also been investigating ready-made fridge/freezers like yours (Waeco' CR range) very impressive power consumption figures tell me are these anywhere close in reality?

On a yacht fridge you don't need the fridge compressor under the fridge so it should be easier still.

That was part of the plan if i go the custom-insulated box route, to place the compressor either out in one of the cockpit lockers or below the sink away from the actual box, although for the sake of making a break-fronted cabinet i could accomodate a ready-made unit like a penguinfrigo or a waeco unit although reading horror stories of the fridge on that Hanse that came out of its hole during a particularly rough delivery still has me err-ing on a custom box with a top-mounted door, but on the whole still undecided.

Still got to finish the battery boxes off tomorrow and bolt in the auxillary tanks opposite before i start on the galley, hoping that'll be this week though.

cheers

Yes I am very please with my Waeco CRP40 model fridge, I bought it as I had limited space to fit it especially behind the fridge where the hull curves, but with this model you can mount the compressor up to 1m away from the fridge if necassary, the consumption is minimal but whats even better its quiet when running (most important at night) , I also bought the Waeco controler with it so when in a marina it runs on mains, as soon as you unplug it 'automatically' switched to battery.

If I am on say on an 8 hour cruising leg under sail only I run the engine every three hours for 15 min and never had a problem.

the flow of heat across an interface depends on the temperature difference and the insulation in between. Having the cooker next to the fridge is obviously worse than having then 10' apart. 6 inch insulation is worse that 10 inch and better than 3. In all situations the firdge will work but next to the cooker it will use more leccy to get to the same temperature.

Mine is next to the cooker with maybe a 2 inch airgap and some insulation. Its biggest issue is that Bowman put the mechanism underneath the fridge so the heat extracted from the fridge then bathes its outside. In you case I would chose the best location that I could and make sure that the mechanism was in a good location preferably with the heat exchanger outside the hull.
