Being a supersticious (sorry about spelling) bunch us sailors....what are your fears....many years ago as a young lifeboat man my then 2nd Cowxswain wouldnt go to sea with a box of "Swan Vesta" matches...they were known to self strike in the box...another Staff Coxswain (Tam Beattie) bless his cotton sox, would not sail with you if you wore green!!!.....it's said to be unlucky to change the name of any vessel..why???any other funny ones out there??.....I would suggest though if the weather is fine and the sea is flat enjoy your day.

Paul.

Personal Superstition

I will not carry on with a long passage if I do not see dolphins in the first 24 hours.

It all started with my first long passage when I left Falmouth for La Corunna and two dolphins came alongside in Carrick Roads (inside Falmouth harbour). They swam alongside and rolled to look up at us.

The boat´s name must be on the bow where the dolphins can read it and tell Neptune we have gone to sea.

(OK, laugh if you want to.)

You do not mention the word rabbits to brixham fishermen!! They are long eared animals! If they see one on the way to the boat, they wont go to sea!

Dolphins, P**s and magpies

I thought leaping dolphins in UK waters were a sign of bad weather as in:

When the sea-hog jumps,
Stand by your pumps

but onto my foibles

We fishermen don't mention the porker word and I wouldn't fancy my luck on any day that I hadn't said "Morning, Mr. Magpie" to any lone magpie that I came upon. Mind you with the number of the black and white scavengers there are these days that is a fairly rare occurance.

If you want to catch roach (that's a freshwater fish) you should sing opera whilst fisihng, some experts prefer Verdi but I'm a Mozart man myself.

There was once an officer in our company fleet who would throw you off the bridge for wearing a green jumper, or saying the other word for bunnies. Or whistling. Especially the whistling. I suspect he wouldn't sail on a Friday, or take women or clergy to sea either. He also thought it unlucky when turning the ship through 180 degrees to turn to port, and would always turn to starboard. I can understand it on a long-keeler with a right-handed prop but an 1800-tonne ship with a bow-thruster? It made for some interesting manoeuvres sometimes.

I was born on the 13th....had my fair share of good and bad luck like most....I still walk under ladders and on the cracks in the pavement.....

Life is what you make of it.....don't blame the poor rabbit or dolphin for things that are going to go wrong anyway...just laugh at everything even yourself....

Re: No rabbits on cross channel ferries thanks....

Going out on Brittany Ferries 'Bretagne' 18 months ago, I went to the on board shop wanting a set of Duracell batteries.

"Sorry we do not have them - the crew objects to the rabbit logo on them. They say its unlucky."

Thats one way of stopping a 6000 ton ferry dead in its tracks I suppose!

Think like all rules the origin is practicality where women in a sex starved crew environment were the cause of crew unrest. The clergy on the other hand often took an unhealthy interest in young midshipmen.
