Freshening up ropes

Did I read somewhere before that you can put your ropes inside a pillow case and put them in the washing machine with some fabric softener to soften up and freshen up ropes? Or did I dream that?
 
Right let's get domesticated... what temp? I was going to put them on the Handwash mode as to not be too harsh? But then again ropes are much stronger than clothes!
 
For the past 5 years my husband has washed the ropes in our washing machine at 30 degrees 900 spin. I won't let him use a pillowcase and there's a lovely tangle to sort out afterwards. No damage so far to the machine so I'm still looking for an excuse to buy a new one.
 
Done it several times. Use powder and cycle for a delicate fabric, so non bio. Long wash, bit of a soak.

Minimum spin, trust me on this!!!! Just untangle and leave somewhere dry and sunny to drain.
 
We separate ours and put them all in their own pillow cases, then stick them in the wash with the OH's work clothes on a 40 degree wash.

I dont think there is any exact science too it but they do seem to appreciate the wash. They handle much better after they have been through the machine!!

I coil them as normal and then use cable ties around the loop to stop them tying into knots. Works reasonably well.
Softer ? A bit, maybe.

Go for it. Cool wash ( 30degC ) works for us. Dont forget to add softener, it will make them nice to handle. We dont bother with the pillow case, but as Sailorman says, they will come out in a tangle. Only takes a few mins to untangle em.
 
Daisy-chain knot the rope then tie the ends together before washing to stop it forming a knotted web. Nikwax make a rope treatment product or just add fabric softener, and scented candles to relax the rope in its bath.

+1 all that.
We only bother wrapping in some sort of bag the end of those warps which have s/steel thimbles. More to protect the washing machine, than anything else.
Oh, and as Nick_H said, better to avoid high rpm spin.
 
I wash all my ropes in the washing machine at the end of the season.
I don't bother with the pillow case - they will get a bit jumbled-up but that's alright.
It really does a wonderful job. If they are very grubby, add a extra bit of washing powder.
You can also do this with small fenders too!!

Must get the wife to do that her knickers are often in a twist
